The Tale of Tsar Saltan - Alexander Pushkin, Gennady Spirin
An essential for fans of elaborately illustrated folk and fairy tales. This is the story of three sisters and how jealousy, betrayal and magic shape their destinies. I found Spirin's retelling of this Russian folktale to be very engaging. And his accompanying illustrations are the perfect compliment - beautiful and dramatic. I can't really pin down the style - a combination of Byzantine aesthetic with an Italian Renaissance execution. Maybe someone more familiar with Russian art has a better description? In any event, I highly recommended this lovely picture book!
