D'Aulaires' Book of Norse Myths - Ingri d'Aulaire, Edgar Parin d'Aulaire, Michael Chabon

I really didn't think any collection could measure up to my beloved Greek myths, but I think I may have found a new love in these stories. Strange, brutal, but above all comical - truly laugh out loud hysterical! I tend to think of Vikings as a somber people shaped by constant warfare and harsh environment. Certainly you can see that influence here, but these stories show that they can't have taken themselves too seriously. The gods of Asgard possess more humility, humanity and fragility than the those of Olympus - giving these stories a slightly more thoughtful quality. I still love my Greek Myths and still say that a children's library is incomplete without D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths on its shelves, but now I believe this one belongs right next to it!
