The Humblebee Hunter - Deborah Hopkinson
An interesting premise for a story which features an (ostensibly fictional?) average day in the life of Charles Darwin and his family. I like a lot about this story - mostly the fact that it portrays a family that is passionate about science and the pursuit of knowledge. The story flows nicely throughout, but ends rather abruptly and feels somewhat incomplete. But I suppose it could be a testament to both author and illustrator that I just wanted *more*. I've loved Jen Corace's illustrations elsewhere (Little Pea, Little Hoot and Hansel and Gretel). And they're just as nice here - extremely evocative of time, place and mood. She's one of the few illustrators whose art I would love to have hanging in my home.
