My Great-Aunt Arizona - Gloria Houston
All the cool kids were reading this over at the Children's Book group for our monthly thematic picture book club. September's theme was appropriately 'back to school' and I really regretted that I wasn't able to fully participate. Especially when all my friends kept posting tantalizing reviews! This one in particular kept popping up in my feed as a particular favorite. Initially it didn't really appeal to me. There's something about the cover image that doesn't really work for me.

It's so nice to be proven wrong. It turns out that the cover image is by far the weakest one (in my humble opinion). The story is essentially a tribute to the author's great-aunt who was a dedicated teacher in the Blue Ridge Mountains for over fifty years. I agree with my friend Abigail that there is nothing earth shattering about this book, but it's still an engaging and touching story. I think kids will enjoy learning about a different way of life - from Aunt Arizona's petticoats and lace up boots to the one room Appalachian schoolhouse. And adults will certainly appreciate the message at the end. I think this would make a nice teacher gift!
