Each Peach Pear Plum - Janet Ahlberg, Allan Ahlberg
E for effort. I love the idea here - an 'I spy' set up where the child searches for familiar characters (Mother Hubbard, Cinderella, etc). I just wasn't wowed by the execution. First, the rhyming is a bit shaky in spots. Second, I know I'm a bit (okay a lot) of a snob when it comes to illustrations, but I just really can't think of much nice to say here. The cover is far superior to anything in the book. I found the interior illustrations to be really cutesy and unsatisfying. And this won the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration in 1978. Hrm...either I'm missing something or that was a bad year. Okay, I'm being a bit of a humbug. This really is a fine book and kids will enjoy it - particularly those who are familiar with nursery rhymes and fairy tales.
