Adelita: A Mexican Cinderella Story - Tomie dePaola
I enjoyed this quite a bit more than I was expecting. The illustrations are really cute, but what I really enjoyed was the multi-cultural take on Cinderella. Adelita's story starts out much like Cinderella's - wicked step family and all, but the difference is that her fairy godmother is actually a beloved family servant named Esperanza. Instead of magic it's Esperanza's love and loyalty that saves the day. Cinderella has never been one of my favorite stories and this little twist really endeared this version to me much more than the original. Some of the dialogue is in Spanish (with English translation immediately following) so this would be a great book for a bilingual family or parents teaching their children Spanish.
