Mermaid Tales from Around the World - Mary Pope Osborne, Troy Howell
So far I've really enjoyed all of these folktale adaptations written by [a:Mary Pope Osborne|578|Mary Pope Osborne|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1209048001p2/578.jpg] and illustrated by [a:Troy Howell|277359|Troy Howell|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1310045071p2/277359.jpg]. I'm impressed with how Osborne has condensed the stories, but not dumbed them down at all - particularly given that I find her Magic Tree House series truly mind-numbing. And, as always, Troy Howell's illustrations are fantastic. I think these might be my favorite of all the collections. With each tale he has paid tribute to its country of origin with his artwork. If I have one complaint, it's only that there aren't ENOUGH illustrations.

I definitely recommend checking out the other story collections:
