Review

I kinda love this and I kinda don't. I am not particularly fashionable myself, but the history of fashion does fascinate me. I particularly love extreme fashions - like the ruffed collar, hennins, bustles, corsets, hobble skirts, chopine, etc. And there is plenty of that here plus more modern things like girdles, go-go boots, flappers, etc. But, I don't know, some of the entries were kind of flimsy - X, Y, and Z are totally throw away in my humble opinion. And, sure, a book like this can't cover it all, but when some of the entries are 'less-than' it makes me wonder about what could have been. I feel the same way about the illustrations - I kinda like them and I kinda don't. I like the looks of them, but they really don't work for every entry and maybe don't work for the subject overall. I dunno. Ultimately, my kid loved this book and I suspect she's not the only one. Also, just an fyi to the author - fashion choices are a lot like family members. I can make fun of my foolish choices in the past, but woe betide the random picture book author who deems punk and/or grunge questionable fashion choices. I never did goth though so go ahead and poke fun.
