Review

I really enjoyed this, but I suppose I'm a bit of a niche audience. Not only am I an unrepentant anglophile and creepy history connoisseur, the Tower of London is one of my very favorite historical/tourist sites of all time. I've toured it twice already and have plans for a return visit in about a month. This time I'll be accompanied by my six year old daughter and I thought a little background reading might enhance her experience. I can't say if that's true just yet, but I can say that we very much enjoyed reading this book.
It contains just the right amount of information for a young school age child. The stories were brief, but informative and engaging. The book cleverly uses the Tower's haunted reputation as a framing device for a brief history and overview from William the Conqueror to the present. Young readers will learn about they mysterious Princes in the Tower and the sad fate of Anne Boleyn. They also get to contrast the lavish prison lodgings of Sir Walter Raleigh with those of Guy Fawkes whose cell was so small he could neither stand nor lie down. And much more! Recommended for any young history buffs/anglophiles, anyone planning a trip to London with children and fans of haunted history.
