Halloween ABC - Eve Merriam
Truly a strange and macabre little book! This is *so* not for everyone - it's not at all surprising that this earned a spot on the banned book list. This book consists of 26 alphabetical poems on a variety of topics from the usual spooky suspects (bats, demons, jack-o-lanterns, skeletons, etc.) to more surprising entries (murderous icicles??). We read this in a few sittings and, in that way, I think we were really able to savor the entries a bit more than one might with a straight read through. I could see this easily becoming a favorite spooky read aloud at Halloween time. Probably not great for sensitive or easily frightened children, but an excellent pick for children who love being spooked.
