I have long been a fan of William Joyce - his beautiful illustrations, his thoughtful and thought-provoking children's books The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs - forget the beyond atrocious film version, Bently and Egg, George Shrinks and so many more. I'm not sure what took me so long to get to this one - perhaps because there was a film associated with it and I'm a total snob.... (I hear the short film is great by the way, I just haven't watched it yet myself.) But still, it's Joyce and so I *knew* it was going to be good. This book will speak to any true book lover who knows what books really truly do for us. And like many of his other picture books, this one isn't 'easy' - it's thoughtful and a little melancholy, but also full of beautiful buoyant moments as well. What lover of books won't love seeing books personified?? The scene with Morris 'doctoring' the sick books is just too priceless for words. Love.
