Smile - Raina Telgemeier

Wow, what a terrifying and traumatic book.

I hate the dentist. Loathe. Seriously, my blood pressure shoots through the roof when I sit in 'the chair' - giving them yet another reason to yell at me and make feel even better about life.

AND I had a really traumatic middle school experience - complete with sadistic bullies, intense insecurities, tragic crushes and all the rest. Thankfully, I never had the intense dental drama that Teglemeier experienced (I never even had braces!) but everything she writes here felt so very personal. I think it helps that she is of my generation - so her pop culture references are MY pop culture references. So, yeah, wow.

This book has been on my radar for some time, but I didn't get around to reading it until my daughter checked it out. I really wonder what she made of it. She really is a little young for the message. She has no concerns about her appearance and is blissfully unconcerned with what anyone thinks. But oh the storm's a'comin' so I'm glad she read this now so that maybe it can plant some seeds for the future.
