My feelings about this book and the subject are complicated. The book, as a stand alone, is super sweet and warm and fuzzy. The photos and story are UNBELIEVABLY cute! But if one does (as the books suggests) any further research you will discover that Knut passed away in 2011 at the age of five - a very short life for a polar bear. This can't help but raise questions about the ethics of raising wild animals in captivity. I am personally becoming less and less comfortable with seeing animals (especially large carnivores) in captivity at zoos, etc. But then again, this story does bring attention to the plight of the polar bear.
