The Hidden House - Martin Waddell
I can't remember how I heard about this book or how it ended up on my to-read list, but I know it's been there forever. If I had to guess I'd say it has something to do with the fact that it was illustrated by Angela Barrett. The story here is simple (almost non-existent really), but still very engaging and satisfying. It's got a kind of melancholy, slightly creepy feel that I think some children really enjoy. I know I did as a child and I think my daughter does too. I don't think I'm doing a very good job 'selling' this one, but trust me it's a sweet little gem of a book!
