This was a refreshing break from some of the rather dreary older Newbery tiles. The plot and characters were enjoyable. It is one of those older titles that is very transportive in terms of time and place, but not so old fashioned as to be completely unrelatable. In fact, I found some of the attitudes toward parenting and gender to be refreshingly modern. Ultimately, while this is a book I enjoyed reading it's not one that I found particularly sparkling or memorable.
