Land of Oz - L. Frank Baum
The protagonist is a little boy named Tip who is a captive of the witch Mombi. This is also the book that introduces the wonderful characters of Jack Pumpkinhead and the Wooden Saw-Horse. A must read!

*Another note: elements of this book and the third book 'Ozma of Oz' were incorporated into a really good movie called Return to Oz.
