Review

My Dear Noel tells the charming and true story of how The Tale of Peter Rabbit came to be. Noel Moore was the son of Beatrix Potter's old governess. She was very fond of him and visited frequently. While she was away in Scotland Noel became very ill and so she sent him an illustrated story to entertain him during his long convalescence. Not only did it serve its intended purpose, it was the beginning of an illustrious career for Ms. Potter.
This story is told via simple and straight forward text paired with attractive, expressive and informative illustrations. (Don't miss the endpapers which feature facsimile reproductions of the famous original letter.) Beatrix's visits to the Moore household are shown as much anticipated affairs. Although it's clear that Beatrix was accustomed to luxury and solitude she always fit right in with the Moore children - bringing presents and tirelessly playing games with them all. It's really nice to think of Potter in this way as I gather she became a bit of a cranky hermit in her later life.
I highly recommend pairing this one with Beatrix.
