The Scrambled States of America (Books for Young Readers) - Laurie Keller
This shouldn't technically be classified as non-fiction as the states do decide to pick up and move (with hysterical results) but the facts are that this is a fantastic way to introduce and reinforce American geography with children. I've been looking and looking for a way to do just this, but everything I've found is either dry and unappealing or cutesy and ineffective. This is the first thing I've come across that incorporates all the elements I was looking for - funny engaging storyline and illustrations combined with solid information. Bravo Laurie Keller! As my goodreads friend Lisa noted in her review this edition, published in 1998, is a bit dated (specifically the population statistics), but I see that amazon.com has a newer edition (with a cd even!?1) We enjoyed this enough to want to purchase this so I'll take a chance on the newer edition and update my review later. Now we just need Ms. Keller to tackle the rest of the world!
