Little Maria is helping make the Christmas tamales. She feels very grown-up while partaking in this activity, and as such thinks it would be wonderful to try on her mother's sparkly wedding ring. But she is heartsick when the ring goes missing and she must find a way retrieve the ring! What follows is a very funny, sweet and touching story. I'm so glad to have discovered this charming little picture book via the Children's Book Picture Book club! Just judging by the cover it's probably a book I would never have discovered. I certainly wouldn't have guessed that it was a Christmas story!
I love so many things about this book! As a life long Texan I'm familiar with the tamales-at-Christmas tradition and it's something that I've always envied. The idea of multiple generations sharing in the camaraderie of cooking is something that I find very appealing. I also love how sweet and kind and gentle the adults in this story are in their interactions with the children. In this way I think that this book is just as relevant for parents as it is for children - reminding us that engaging and involving children is a vital part of their life experience. I also love that this is a Christmas story that never mentions gifts or Santa or religion. It's all about the family and its traditions.
