Review

This book should be renamed something like An Alphabet of the Middle Ages: With Random Tidbits of Information and Lore About Flora, Fauna and Unicorns Thrown in for Good Measure. Truthfully, almost every thematic alphabet book has to stretch a bit, but this one does contortions to keep with its theme. But seriously, E for effort, when you consider that author Marianna Mayer and artist Michael Hague did manage to incorporate unicorns into almost every letter description and/or illustration. Does it work? Well, in a way yes. Most of Hague’s illustrations are lovely (but what on earth is up with M’s unicorn? Is he starving? Does he have a case of the mange?) So really it’s great for unicorn loving children who just want to ogle their favorite mythical beast in twenty six different settings. And some children will totally dig all the little bits of information scattered throughout. But my logical brain just can’t help but say WTF?
