Daughter of the Game - Tracy Grant
This was a fast paced mystery/romance set in Regency England. The highlight of the novel is the historical backdrop. Most historical fiction that I read is set in Victorian London so this was a nice change. There was a lot of interesting detail and insight into the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. I don't want to give essential plot details away, but I also enjoyed the characterization of the female protagonist - it was an interesting twist. But if I'm honest the plot was sort of convoluted and often predictable and the dialogue was downright painful in parts. Which is really ironic for a book that starts with the line: All the world may be a stage, but sometimes the dialogue's too bloody ridiculous for any self-respecting playwright. Hmmmm....But, I understand that this was a debut novel for Tracy Grant and I enjoyed this enough to give her other books a chance when I'm looking for a light read.
