Pleasant Fieldmouse - Jan Wahl, Maurice Sendak
This book is a nice combination of chapter and picture book that is perfect for reading aloud to the 5 to 9 age range. It has a Frog and Toad meets Winnie the Pooh sensibility - the general idea being that if you enjoy that clever, leisurely style of story telling you will likely enjoy this collection as well. Pleasant Fieldmouse is the endearing little protagonist – always endeavoring to improve his forest home and help his friends. And he has his work cut out for him with friends like Haunted Beaver and Mrs. Worry-Wind Hedgehog and foes like Terrible Owl and Tired Fox.

There are six stories in this collection and all are fantastic – ranging from quirky and funny to touching and thought provoking. My very favorite story was The Picnic Which Wasn’t – in it Pleasant posts an open invitation which reads: Invitid good peeple (only) to a picnick. This has everyone contemplating their own ‘goodness’, weighing their merits and faults, each ultimately deciding they must not be good enough to attend! Each story is accompanied by plenty of gorgeous pen and ink drawings by Maurice Sendak.
