Tale of the Shining Princess - Donald Keene, Sally Fisher
This Japanese folktale from the ninth or tenth century tells the story of Kaguya-hime - an unearthly and beautiful woman sent to live with a poor bamboo cutter and his wife. There are familiar global fairy tale motifs including the 5 suitors who sent on impossible tasks to win Kaguya-hime's hand. But what unfolds is a unique story of a very powerful female protagonist. We find out later that it is not out of mere capriciousness that she sends these obsessed men to do her bidding. Instead she has a secret that prevents her from choosing a mortal suitor. The accompanying illustrations are from an eighteenth century manuscript that was likely commissioned for the powerful Tokugawa clan. They are a very lovely addition to the text. This version includes notes on both the translation and the illustrations. Highly recommended for all global folk and fairy tale enthusiasts!
