In many ways Radiant Girl is a fairly typical coming of age type story. Katya deals with fairly typical adolescent angst – boys, friends, and the dawning realization that her parents are just as flawed as anyone else. What isn’t typical, however, is the 1980s Soviet backdrop and the examination of how the Chernobyl disaster affected the plant workers and their families.
It will be really interesting to see what the other moms and daughters in book club make of this one. Lots to discuss for sure!
