I'm not gonna lie - I was a BIG I Claudius fan back in the day. So when I saw this new historical fiction novel written from the point of view of the baddest of the baddies - Livia Drusilla - my interest was piqued . Unfortunately, for this author, making a character sympathetic means turning her into the dullest Mary Sue you'd ever want to meet. I'll take scheming, homicidal Livia any day of the week if this is the alternative. The history seems well researched, but it's all presented in a very anachronistic feeling way.
